The famous Gardena High School Art
Collection includes paintings by gifted
California artists; these were selected,
purchased and donated to GHS by graduating
classes. The collection includes painting
from the classes of ’54, ’55, ’56, and ’57
and a few paintings from later years such as
1967. After 1957 most paintings were donated
to GHS formed a separate collection from the
paintings that were purchased by earlier
classes.
The GHS Collection is still intact and some
pieces are exhibited at the GHS Art Gallery.
However, GHS Alumni have been assisting with
efforts to find the Collection a permanent
home and support its care and maintenance.
Funds are needed to purchase cabinets and
display the art; buy security doors for the
Gallery, improve climate control and alarm
systems, and find a larger storage area.
Wayne Johnson C’1966 and Janet Perdew
Halstead C’1966 have diligently supported
the Collection and a variety of efforts to
keep it together and make sure it is
exhibited in the local community. Janet
reports: I had an interesting talk with the
(GHS) principal and he said that the
district is very pleased with what we have
done for the collection. Also, they do have
the right to sell any art or artifact that
was donated to any school in the district,
very good news.”
How can the Class of 1965 help?
If you have an interest in joining the
alumni volunteers working on these
issues, contact Janet
Halstead(below);
Anyone with expertise or contacts for
products or services in the Collection’s
areas of need, please Janet.
To make a donation, buy a DVD or book of
the GHS Collection (see description
below) make check payable to:

Class of 1965 Birthday Party
The
Class of 1965 celebrated our 60th Birthday
Party on September 15, 2007 in Redondo
Beach, CA at Delzano’s Restaurant. Check out
the Photo Gallery to get a flavor of the
event…it was well attended not only by the
C’1965, but also by friends from Classes
1964, 1966 and 1967. Thanks to everyone who
came out to celebrate – as always, GHS
C’1965 knows how to have a good time!
Those
of you who couldn’t attend were missed! We
had a great turn-out, welcoming GHS friends
from the classes of 1963, 1964, 1966, and
1967 and many C’1965 classmates that we
hadn’t seen in a very long time.
Early arrivers helped close Tony’s on the
Pier at Friday night’s cocktail mixer and
OOPs, We Did It Again at Delzano’s on
Saturday night! Those of us who could
stagger to Torrance Beach by noon for Sunday
in the Park had a relaxing visit with a
beautiful view of the coast before saying
our final goodbyes. (Some of our classmates
drove to Huntington Beach for the 11th
Annual GHS All-up Picnic and we’re looking
forward to hearing about that event.)
